Elmwood Community Resource Centre is pleased to share Addressing Gender-Based Violence in Black, South Asian and Arab Communities: A Transformative Consciousness Framework as a free downloadable resource.
Developed by Nina Condo and Jonathan Worae, the framework examines gender-based violence through an equity-focused and culturally informed lens. It brings together research, lived experience and professional knowledge to help service providers better understand the diverse realities, strengths and support needs of survivors.
The resource explores several socio-cultural approaches, including the Afrocentric theoretical lens, the Lifetime Spiral of Gender Abuse, Kapwa and Ubuntu. Together, these concepts encourage culturally attuned, survivor-centred support grounded in dignity, interconnectedness, community responsibility and respect for each person’s autonomy.
The framework also introduces transformative consciousness as an approach to healing and social change. It emphasizes shared power, open dialogue, accountability and the creation of safe spaces where survivors can be heard, supported and actively involved in their own healing and advocacy.
This resource may be valuable for community organizations, service providers, counsellors, advocates and others working to prevent gender-based violence and strengthen culturally responsive supports for racialized communities.
