Elmwood Community Resource Centre is pleased to share the Roots to Resilience Literature Review: Reducing Substance Use Risk and Harm in Newcomer Communities as a free downloadable resource.
Developed to inform ECRC’s Roots to Resilience program, the review examines the barriers newcomers may face when seeking substance use and recovery supports, including language differences, stigma, migration-related trauma, social isolation, discrimination and unfamiliarity with Canadian systems. It also considers how culture, family, faith and community can shape experiences of substance use, help-seeking and recovery.
The resource brings together research and best practices for creating more inclusive and effective programming. Key areas include culturally tailored services, trauma-informed care, wraparound supports, peer and community engagement, language accessibility, family involvement, strengths-based care and long-term recovery support.
This literature review may be valuable for community organizations, service providers, researchers, policymakers and others working to strengthen substance use prevention and recovery services for newcomers, immigrants and refugees.
